Gregor the Overlander

2 Feb

By: Suzanne Collins, published by Scholastic press in 2003

Things just haven’t been the same ever since Gregor’s father mysteriously disappeared two years ago. His mother works all day having to leave him with his hopelessly confused grandmother and his two year old sister called Boots. One day in the laundry room Gregor follows Boots into the vent they discover a world that’s peace is hanging on by a thread.

Bats have taken the role of man’s best friend and rats are six feet tall and are also the natural enemies of humans. Gregor wants to get out of this place known as the Underland as soon as possible but can’t when he is told that the fate of the Underland rest on his shoulders because a prophecy has foretold his arrival. He is spoken of as a warrior, that will defeat the rats and be accompanied by twelve other warrior but only eight will remain when the quest is over.

Still not wanting to join this quest he mind is immediately changed when there are signs that his father is being held prisoner by the rats for his scientific intelligence. Who will be the four unlucky warriors? Will Gregor and boots find his dad? Will Gregor complete his mission successfully? How will he return to his mother that is sure to worried sick?

I read this book in one day with three-hundred-two pages. I thought it was a great book it was written by the very successful Suzanne Collins also the author of the Hunger Games. This was her first novel and I thought it was pretty good, it moved at the right pace. I enjoyed this book a lot. The only thing I would change is that I wish book was narrated by Gregor and instead was written in 1st person. Overall I was glad I read it.

I recommend this book to anyone that can use their imagination or enjoys fiction, if you have a hard time picturing something that is really fictional. I think that you will enjoy this book and have a new perspective on the world because of the dangers that the Underland faces, it makes you think about where you live and make you thankful for the things you have.

Quote 1:

This is the prophecy of the gray mentioned in the review.
“Beware, Underlanders, time hangs by a thread.
The hunters are hunted, white water runs red.
The gnawers will strike to extinguish the rest.
The hope of the hopeless resides in a quest.
An Overland warrior, a son of the sun,
May bring us back light, he may bring us back none.
But gather your neighbors and follow his call
Or rats will most surely devour us all.
Two over, two under, of royal descent,
Two fliers, two crawlers, two spinners assent.
One gnawer beside and one lost up ahead.
And eight will be left when we count up the dead.
The last who will die must decide where he stands.
The fate of the eight is contained in his hands.
So bid him take care, bid him look where he leaps,
As life may be death and death life again reaps.”
